Day 7 - Journal Exercise (Trip)

"Write about a trip you’ve taken."

💠

When I was a Sophomore in High School, I spent a semester with my sister, brother-in-law, and niece. They invited me on their trip to Cancun, Mexico. It was and still remains, the only time I had ventured out of the States. I remember the beaches being extremely white and fluffy and the sand wasn't anything like our beaches in the Gulf of Mexico, Texas. The sand here is brownish and littered with debris and jellyfish. Don't get me wrong, they are still beautiful, in their own way, and I am grateful for living only a few hours away from open waters, but the contrast of the two experiences are very different.
I can't remember what it was that I ate or drank that first day in Cancun, but it did its number on me. Montezuma II, the last Aztec Emperor to rule before being conquered by Spanish Conquistador Cortes, apparently got the last laugh. Many tourists visiting Mexico fall ill with a  virus coined "Montezuma's Revenge", a bacteria in the food and water only native to that area, the cause. It's a dreadfully depressing illness that makes you spend half your trip in the loo, with explosive diarrhea (apologies on the graphic visual of that). I was one such tourist.
The resort we stayed in was immaculate, with beautiful scenery and beautiful people. I was able to go parasailing (being attached to a parachute being pulled by a boat), jet-skiing, and we even spent one night out clubbing at a "Senior Frogs" dance club. I had long hair back then, and they had these outside malls, I had these really cool women braid my hair and put beads in it. That particular night was a "Foam Party", the entire dance floor was covered in foam, it was like dancing in a giant, shallow, bubble bath. Oddly enough, one of my sister's friends was there in Cancun at the same time and met us at the party. She had a daughter my age and we kinda hit it off, yet I was still very young and shy then... awkward is a good word for it. Ultimately, it was an amazing trip, and I think about it all the time.
